A Kenyan news outlet reported today that authorities have jailed a 65-year-old abortionist who ran a privately licensed abortion facility, following the deaths of a 20 year old woman and her unborn baby in a botched abortion.

While awaiting to be arraigned in court, the retired doctor is being held at Sagana Police Station. Sagana is located 60 miles north of Nairobi, the nation’s capital.

Johnson Muriithi, reporting for Citizen TV, explained that “police had a difficult time trying to save the accused from irate residents who threatened to lynch him.”

“Sagana residents have also faulted county public health officers for allowing the doctor to operate a clinic despite reports that he conducts back-door abortions,” according to Muriithi .

Abortion is legal in Kenya but in only limited circumstances.
