“I want to be around when the nation’s abortion rate falls to zero”

It really escaped my notice until a dear friend sent me a message via LinkedIn, congratulating me on my work anniversary. I had been so busy working, I had forgotten to pause and reflect on the date. I must admit, I approach the anniversary with a flood of emotions.

I am overwhelmed by gratitude for the opportunity to advocate each day for pregnant women, their babies, the frail elderly, and people with disabilities. It is an honor and a privilege to serve them with what skills and talents I possess.

Since I began working at the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation that October day many autumns ago, we have seen abortion totals plummet in the Commonwealth. They are now at their lowest level since state officials first began keeping statistics.

We have also seen at least a half dozen abortion facilities shut their doors because they either could not or would not meet basic health and safety standards. Our abortion center regulation law is helping to keep women safer with yearly inspections of abortion centers guaranteed.

It seems as if I have spent lifetime writing about the life issues, trying to persuade those without an opinion on them to cross to the pro-life side. I also hope that I have planted a few seeds among those who describe themselves as “pro-choice,” so that perhaps they will change their position in the future, based on incontrovertible evidence of the humanity of the preborn child and the harmful effects of abortion on women.

But I also feel as if I have only just begun! I want to see the toppling of the tragic U.S. Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade. I long to see Pennsylvania enact lasting protections for each and every preborn child. I want to see the annual March for Life transform from an effort to rebuild a culture of life to a celebration of a life-affirming society. And I want to be around when the nation’s abortion rate falls to zero.
