Abortion Pill Reversal bill on way to North Dakota governor’s desk

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum

After overwhelming passage first in the North Dakota House and then in the Senate Judiciary Committee, the full Senate Friday voted 34-11 in favor of HB 1336.

The bill has been sent along to Governor Doug Burgum who hopefully will sign the informed consent measure into law.

HB 1336, which passed the House 73-16 in late January, is the Abortion Pill Reversal Informed Consent bill. It would require abortion facilities to provide information to any woman seeking an abortion about how she can potentially save her baby if she changes her mind after taking the first medication, but not the second.

A bill banning the dismemberment of living unborn babies is also being considered in the North Dakota legislature.

Five states already have laws that require women to be told about APR– “Abortion Pill Reversal.” Medication Abortions [“RU-486”] involve two drugs: Mifeprex, taken at the abortion clinic, and then 48-72 hours later, misoprostol, a prostaglandin. The Abortion Pill Reversal technique is premised on the woman not taking the second drug and being given large dosages of progesterone in order to counteract the effect of the first pill.

According to the Grand Forks Herald, Sen. Janne Myrdal said, “The language in this bill is informational only, it is a notification only, giving the woman the full information she needs to make her own decision if she regrets her choice within a short period of time.”
