Strong pro-life candidate wins runoff in North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District

Tuesday night produced a strong pro-life candidate to compete in a special election to be held in September in North Carolina.

Dr. Greg Murphy prevailed in a runoff to fill North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District seat, following the death of Congressman Walter B. Jones, Jr. in February. Dr. Murphy carried 60% of the vote.

Dr. Murphy has a proven pro-life record in the state house. He voted for the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act which would provide medical care to a baby who survives an abortion equal to that given to any other baby born at the same age. The bill was later vetoed by pro-abortion Gov. Roy Cooper. The Senate voted to override but the House finished a few votes short.

“National Right to Life is pleased to endorse Dr. Greg Murphy, whose position on life reflects the values of North Carolina’s 3rd District voters,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “If elected, Dr. Murphy would work diligently to protect all innocent human life.” Dr. Murphy faces Democrat Allen Thomas, Libertarian Tim Harris, and Constitution Party candidate Greg Holt in the September 10 special election.

“I am solidly pro-life and will do all within my power to protect the innocent unborn,” Dr. Murphy said. “As a Christian, I also will work to show compassion for those having to make this decision and provide as many alternatives as possible, including reducing barriers to adoption.”

Last month, National Right to Life endorsed pro-life North Carolina state Senator Dan Bishop who is running for the 9th Congressional District. As a state Senator, Bishop also voted for North Carolina’s Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

Bishop will face Democrat Dan McCready and two third-party candidates on September 10.

Both Senator Bishop and Dr. Murphy oppose abortion on demand and using tax dollars to pay for abortions.

“North Carolina Right to Life Inc. PAC is thrilled to have two solidly pro-life candidates, North Carolina Senator Dan Bishop running for the 9th District, and state Representative Greg Murphy, M.D. running for the 3rd,” said Barbara Holt, president of North Carolina Right to Life. “Both men have proven pro-life track records in our General Assembly. Their pro-life credentials will serve them well in Congress.”
