The opportunity to learn from the best of the best

Editor’s note. The following remarks were delivered at the opening luncheon of the 2019 National Right to Life Convention— “A Time to be Encouraged.”

Good morning! Welcome to the opening session of the 49th annual National Right to Life Convention. I am so glad you are all here. We have a content-packed weekend for you.

For a variety of reasons, this weekend in this city was the right time and the right place to hold the convention. But that meant our amazing, dedicated Board of Directors met yesterday, on July 4, to talk about the future of the pro-life movement and National Right to Life in particular.

I want to tell you of one decision made yesterday– President Donald Trump is the right man in the right place at the right time and our Board of Directors unanimously endorsed him for re-election next year.

As the only presidential candidate who supports the “unalienable right to life” for unborn children, I thought it was fitting that the endorsement came on the day we celebrated the Declaration of Independence. …

For the remainder of today and all day tomorrow, you have the opportunity to learn from the best of the best. Whether your interests lie in legislation, politics, social media, fundraising, changing hearts and minds through education, and working with women who have had abortion or the younger generations, we have something for you.

I encourage you to try something new. If you have never done fundraising or you don’t know what a Twitter handle is, stretch yourself. There may be some area you would be really good at but you hadn’t really thought about it.

Use this weekend to prepare yourself for what I think will be a rough and tumble year. With elections coming up, and the battles we’ve seen in state legislatures this year, we need to be prepared for anything.

Our opponents have made their position very clear. Abortion should be legal for any reason, or no reason, with no protections for unborn children up to, and even after, birth.

They want your tax dollars to pay for abortion and they want to force health care providers to perform, or assist with, the abortion.

Our opponents think we should use tax dollars to promote the killing of unborn children in other countries. We have representatives at international conferences. They know that families in developing countries want clean water, and schools, and jobs, and a safe place to raise their families. They don’t want us helping them to kill their children.

The Supreme Court has ruled that states can’t force pregnancy centers to give information to their clients– which goes against the center’s philosophy– so our opponents will look for ways to just shut them down. They don’t want women to have “that” choice- Life.

What women are subtly being told is that they only way they can succeed; the only way they can be a real woman, is to kill their child.

We don’t know when, or how, or if Roe v Wade will be overturned, but the abortion industry is truly worried that it will be soon and next year’s election could be the tipping point, either way. The Democratic presidential candidates are making all kinds of wild promises about what they will do to promote and expand abortion if elected.

This country will make a decision next year– do we continue on the path toward protecting unborn children or do we expand and pay for abortion as a new law of the land?

Yesterday, as you all know, was Independence Day, one of my favorite holidays. The men gathered in Philadelphia in 1776 who decided to break away from England and form a new country were lawyers, businessmen, and farmers. They came from different backgrounds and likely had different philosophies but all loved America. All were intelligent individuals and, as a group, made up an incredible brain trust.

First, we got that unparalleled document, our Declaration of Independence, then down the road a few years, the Articles of Confederation, then the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

These were the right people in the right place at the right time. But our country has strayed from the ideals laid out for its people, and now YOU are the right people in the right place at the right time. You, also, are making history; righting a great wrong done to so many women and children.

Use this convention to equip yourselves in ways and with skills you didn’t know you had, so that you can make a difference in your states, your communities, and our country.

Help America to remain that shining city on a hill, a beacon of light to the world. Let us show the world what a society looks like that protects its most vulnerable; a society that loves life and respects the value and dignity of each human being.
