Live Action Traces Warren Buffett Cash to Study Trying to End FDA Abortion Pill Safeguards

Pro-abortion researchers trying to convince the FDA to remove abortion pill restrictions had financial support from billionaire investor Warren Buffett, according to a new Live Action News investigation.

Live Action released a report Aug. 11, showing that Berkshire Hathaway CEO Buffett funded the study through his foundation and that, much earlier, he was one of several investors in the company that developed the abortion pill mifepristone.

A disclosure showed that the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation [named after Buffett’s wife] funded the 2019 study designed “To assess outcomes of medication abortion provided through telemedicine compared with standard medication abortion at Planned Parenthood health centers in four U.S. states.”

The authors of the study want the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to remove restrictions on mifepristone, a controversial abortion pill released in 2000 that is also known as RU486. Live Action noted that all the researchers were abortion advocates, many of whom work for pro-abortion organizations (and therefore profit from abortion), including Planned Parenthood.

Study co-author Dr. Daniel Grossman advocated in 2016 for the FDA to remove restrictions from the drug. He wrote “laws must be challenged in states that are unnecessarily limiting who can provide medication abortion or how it can be provided.”

They tried to publish in the most recent paper in Obstetrics & Gynecology without disclosing the grant’s source, but got pushback from the journal insisting disclosure is necessary to avoid conflicts of interest, according to documents shared by Live Action.

Live Action dug up a 2001 Congressional Research Service Report for Congress showing mifepristone maker Danco Laboratories, LLC was financed by pro-abortion nonprofit Population Council, Buffett, George Soros’s foundation, and the Packard foundation. Those investments prompted Live Action to accuse Buffett and others of supporting abortion for “profit,” and to lament the mainstream media’s lack of coverage of the story.

But Buffett’s efforts to promote abortion are long-standing and go way beyond a grant for a 2019 study promoting RU486, but those didn’t gain liberal media attention either.

In 2014, the Media Research Center found that Buffett had donated more than $1.2 billion to promote abortion between 2001 and 2012. The sum was enough to pay for the abortions of more than 2.7 million babies in the womb. That was equivalent to the entire population of the city of Chicago. Planned Parenthood received the most money, but was only one of many abortion groups he supported.

In spite of that massive spending, ABC, CBS and NBC mentioned Buffett’s abortion spending just once (out of 545 stories).
