Senator Terry Johnson Introduces SB 208

Senator Terry Johnson

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Today in the Ohio Senate, recently sworn-in Senator Terry Johnson, a practicing physician, introduced the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

Senator Johnson was appointed to the seat previously held by former Sen. Joe Uecker, sponsor of several pieces of Ohio Right to Life priority legislation over his tenure, including the Unborn Child Dignity Act.

“For many decades the pro-abortion industry has hidden behind the cloak of medical terminology in an attempt to dehumanize an unborn child,” said Senator Johnson. “In this case, that simply cannot be done. Let’s be perfectly clear: a baby human that is born alive can no longer be termed a ‘tissue mass’ or even a fetus. It is an infant, and it must by any standard of human decency be treated as such.”

“We are excited that Dr. Johnson will be carrying his 100% pro-life record as a state representative into his new role in the Ohio Senate,” said Angie Duduit, Vice President of Scioto County Right to Life. “It is sad that such legislation must even be considered, but it comes as no surprise to us that he is already stepping up to the plate to support the precious lives of newborn children, and we know he will continue the great work that Senator Uecker has done.”

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is a similar law to one that is being debated in Congress. In March, the Ohio Senate unanimously passed Senate Resolution 41, which urged Congress to pass the federal Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

“When the Senate unanimously passed SR 41 calling on Congress to pass a federal Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, we were encouraged to see Republicans and Democrats come together to speak out against the evil of abandoning a newborn baby who survives a failed abortion to die,” said Stephanie Ranade Krider, Vice President of Ohio Right to Life. “We hope that we can all come together to pass this bill at the state level, to ensure that babies born in Ohio are given full protection no matter the circumstances of their birth.”

Ohio Right to Life will work with Senator Terry Johnson to ensure this legislation is passed.
