Kansas Supreme Court decision does not reflect our values

The weather in Kansas on April 26, 2019 has long since been forgotten but the climate in Kansas was absolutely chilling. It was on that day that the Hodes & Nauser v. Schmidt verdict declared nearly unlimited abortion a “right” throughout our beautiful state. Now this “right” can defeat even the most broadly accepted pro-life laws and further threaten women and babies.

Even something as simple and common sense as parental notification laws could be done away with. Young people are required to have a parent present to get their learner’s permit to drive in Kansas. Anyone under 18 years of age can’t even get a library card without a parent present. Yet, the abortion industry, which has opposed parental notification laws for decades, may soon be able to perform an abortion on a 14-year-old and her parents may never know. Think this sounds far-fetched? Just look at states like Alaska where the court’s found a “right” to nearly unlimited abortion and struck down parental notification.

Planned Parenthood’s website lists the parental notification laws for each state and acknowledges that Kansas requires parental permission but notes “a judge can excuse you from this requirement.” Their partner organization, Advocates for Youth, claim parental consent and notification laws have “many negative outcomes, few positive ones” without a single study citation.

“Young people deserve the right to access the full range of reproductive and sexual health services they need, which includes abortion care. And right now, young people are at the forefront of the reproductive health, rights, and justice movements. Activists must be in solidarity with them against the harmful parental involvement restrictions that can put their health and well-being at risk.” – Advocates for Youth

The abortion industry didn’t respect laws and regulations before. With a “right” to abortion in Kansas now, it is a “no holds barred” disregard.

Kansans for Life is vigilantly working to keep Kansans informed of legislative action and abortion industry plans. Thanks for partnering with us to take action to fight for life.
