The 2020 NRLC Essay contest is complete and the winners of the two divisions have been notified.  This year’s contest drew entrants from 41 states and the District of Columbia.  The states with the top number of participants were Kansas, Maryland, and Michigan.

The two divisions – Junior and Senior – each have three top winners: first, second and third place.  This year there was a tie for third place in the Junior Division.

The winners are as follows:

Senior Division

First Place, Alexander Dunsmoor, MA

Second Place, Malia Linde, SD

Third Place, Noel Vanderbilt, MI

Junior Division

First Place, Karina Novotny, SD

Second Place, Evelyn Williams, MN

Third Place, TIE: Logan Mulder, SD and Hope White, KS

Contestants were asked to write an essay of 500 or fewer words on the simple but fundamental question of “Why are you pro-life?”  The essays that came back illustrated many motivations. Some cited their faith, or the experience of a family member who had an unplanned pregnancy, or a brother or sister who had a disability, to name just three.  It was very encouraging to see these young people express their pro-life views with passion and eloquence.

Over a two-week period, the expertise of 22 judges determined the winners of the 2020 NRLC Essay contest.  The judges who volunteered their time came from all walks of life and from all part of the United States–from Alaska to South Carolina and everywhere in between.

The 2021 Pro-Life Essay Contest will address “Why are you pro-life?” The Senior Division is for grades 10 – 12 while the Junior Division is for student in grades 7 – 9.  Essays should be submitted between December 20, 2020 and January 21, 2021.  All essays for the 2021 contest must be postmarked by January 21, 2021.

The Pro-Life Essay Contest is part of a number of programs from the National Right to Life Committee that are molding and empowering the future leaders of the pro-life movement. Those include the NRL Academy, NRLC Internships, the NRLC Oratory Contest, the Video Contest, and a host of pro-life leadership camps that are held by state and local NRLC affiliates.

We want to thank all of the contestants and their respective teachers and schools for being a part of the 2020 National Right to Life Essay Contest!
