City of Austin doles out $150,000 to pro-abortion group aiding minors in obtaining abortions without parents’ knowledge

They don’t call the city of Austin, Texas, an abortion haven for nothing.

Writing for The Texan, Daniel Friend reported that without dissent, the Austin City Council on Thursday “approved a $150,000 contract for Jane’s Due Process, an organization that assists pregnant minors in obtaining abortions.” It’s much more than that.

The organization helps minors obtain abortions without their parents’ knowledge or consent.

“The pro-abortion group advertises itself to teenagers who want to get abortions without telling their parents,” writes Micaiah Bilger. “Texas law requires a parent to consent to an underage girl’s abortion, but the pro-abortion group takes advantage of a judicial bypass exception in the law that is meant for victims of abuse. Instead of informing the parents, the pro-abortion group helps girls request permission from a judge.”

The $150,000 in funding is “‘to provide logistical support services for abortion access, for a term of one year,’” The Texan reports. The wording was carefully chosen.

As Texas Right to Life pointed out, Senate Bill 22 prohibits state and local taxpayer dollars from funding or benefiting abortion providers and their affiliates. “But organizations that assist with logistical services around abortion are eligible for funding, thereby skirting the specific restraints of SB 22.”

This isn’t the first time the city of Austin has aided and abetted the abortion industry. “Prior to the passing of SB 22, Austin provided a leasing agreement with Planned Parenthood to provide a piece of property to the organization for the next twenty years at a rate of one dollar per year,” Friend writes.

The latest end run around state law did not go down well with the author of SB 22.

“State Sen. Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels), who authored the bill, said that the city’s budget amendment ‘defiantly violates the spirit of Senate Bill 22, if not an outright violation against the law,” Friend reported.
