Euthanasia is the worst form of elder abuse

Today is the United Nations’ 15th annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time to raise awareness of the abuse and neglect of older persons. As the U.N. explains, it “represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.”

Such neglect and abuse is common around the world. And the very worst form of elder abuse is euthanasia and assisted suicide. This killing is the ultimate abandonment of those facing the challenges of life, such as illness, disability, and isolation. Yet the legalization and expansion of euthanasia is spreading to more and more jurisdictions and endangering more and more people.

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let’s remember that every member of the human family—regardless of age, ability, and health—deserves our protection. Let’s push back against the march of euthanasia and make sure we value everyone.
