Even in pro-life states, sometimes one of the greatest obstacles is getting a proposal out of committee. If the chairman chooses, he or she can sit on the bill until the legislature runs out of time. Or the committee can simply be deadlocked.
That’s why the action taken by the Nebraska legislature was so important. “On Tuesday, Nebraska senators voted 30-8 to get LB 814 out of the Judiciary Committee, which had been deadlocked on the measure,” reported Martha Stoddard of the Omaha World-Herald.
LB 814 was the top priority of Nebraska Right to Life. “We are thankful that a majority of the Nebraska Legislature agrees that living unborn babies should never be torn limb from limb in the womb and left to bleed to death,” said Julie Schmit-Albin, executive director of Nebraska Right to Life. “Senator Suzanne Geist has provided excellent leadership in guiding LB 814 to floor debate.”
The ban simply says you can’t dismember a living unborn baby. “Geist said the proposed ban would protect the most vulnerable in society,” Stoddard reported
“I believe that discussion of human dignity belongs at the top of that list,” Geist said. “It’s more important to me than tax credits.”
Currently 12 states prohibit this hideous form of abortion—Kansas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky, Ohio, North Dakota, and Indiana
With just under two weeks to go in the session, pro-abortionists have pledged all-out resistance. Stoddard writes that
the bill’s opponents vowed to use every means possible to stop the ban. Sen. Megan Hunt of Omaha said there would be a filibuster taking up time at every stage of debate. If the bill passes, she said, it will be challenged in court.
“It’s not a threat, it’s a promise,” she said.
To which Geist responded, “I still have some work to do,” but adding, “It’s apparent that the majority of the body agrees with this bill.”
