All humans, regardless of disability, have human rights that need protection

by | Dec 3, 2020

Since 1992, the United Nations has designated today, Dec. 3, as International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The 2020 theme is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World.”

“If we are to Build Back Better after the pandemic, it can only be done by making sure to fully recognize the human rights of all human beings,” says Scott Fischbach, executive director of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life Global Outreach (MCCL GO). “There are no exceptions based on disability, or age, or illness, or location inside or outside the womb. All human beings—disabled or not, healthy or sick, born or unborn—must be included and protected from threats such as abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia.”

U.N. officials estimate that 15 percent of the world’s population—more than one billion people—carry on their daily lives with a disability. An estimated 46 percent of people 60 years and older have disabilities. One in every five women is likely to experience disability in her lifetime, while one in every 10 children is a child with a disability.

U.N. instruments provide support for protecting the human rights—including the right to life—of all human beings. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.” The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities considers “discrimination against any person on the basis of disability … a violation of the inherent dignity and worth of the human person.” It also states that “every human being has the inherent right to life” and calls on nations to “take all necessary measures to ensure its effective enjoyment by persons with disabilities on an equal basis with others.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has proven once again just how fragile human life is,” concludes Fischbach. “It is precious, and we need to protect and take care of everyone.”

MCCL GO is the U.N.- and OAS-accredited global outreach program of the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life Education Fund. Our goal is to protect as many human beings as possible from the destruction of abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. Learn more at
