Archbishop Naumann says pro-abortion President Biden “creates a real problem for the church in the United States because he’s confusing people about what authentic Catholic teaching is”

Appearing on Newsmax TV on Wednesday, Joseph F. Naumann, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, continued his critique of the flurry of actions undertaken by pro-abortion President Joe Biden, who is routinely described by the major media as a “devout Catholic.”

Archbishop Naumann, who is chairman of the U.S. bishops’ conference (USCCB) pro-life committee, told host Chris Salcedo, “We’ve faced presidents before who were aggressive in their advocacy for abortion, but this is a unique situation for the church in the United States, the Catholic Church, because we haven’t had a Catholic in that office doing this. So, he creates a real problem for the church in the United States because he’s confusing people about what authentic Catholic teaching is, in addition to the great evil that he’s involved in terms of promoting aboard and here in the United States as well.”

The interview centered on President Biden’s support for repealing the life-saving Hyde Amendment and the Little Sisters of the Poor.

As our readers recall, The Little Sisters won two rounds at the Supreme Court against a mandate, issued by HHS under a provision of ObamaCare, that would force them to provide health insurance coverage for products and procedures they find morally unacceptable. It is expected that the Biden administration, far from defending organizations such as the Little Sisters of the Poor in court, will defend the mandate.

Referring to the repeal of the Hyde Amendment, Archbishop Naumann said, “I’m very concerned about the Hyde Amendment. It’s a policy that’s had broad support from both Democrats and Republicans for almost 50 years, and for a president who saying he’s working for ‘unity,’ to make this a priority, and to try to shove this down the throats of the American people, I think is a very sad moment.”

He added, “And the fact this president continues to identify himself as a devout Catholic makes that even more painful for those of us in the church.”

With respect to The Little Sisters, an order of Catholic religious, Archbishop Naumann said, “How do you work against a group like the Little Sisters of the Poor who have dedicated their lives to caring for poor elderly and helping their families? And to try to force them to violate their own conscience in order to continue to do their ministry, I think  it’s mind-boggling and unconscionable.”

Archbishop Naumann talked about President Biden’s lack of candor about abortion. He said

“The President chooses to use euphemisms by calling abortion ‘health care.’ And again I think that’s particularly offensive. Health care doesn’t involve destroying life. It’s trying to help lives, heal lives, protect lives. Yet every abortion involves the destruction of one human life and I think always, inevitably, scars the mother, emotionally, spiritually, and sometimes physically. So to say that this is providing ‘health care’ is really a manipulation of words, which if you are trying to violate a fundamental human right that’s what you do. You try to manipulate the language.”
