The 2021 NRLC Essay contest is complete and the winners  have been selected.  The Senior division essays will run Tuesday through Friday this week. The Junior division winners will be announced next week.

Each contestant was asked to write an essay of 500 or fewer words on the simple but fundamental question of “Why are you pro-life?”

This year’s contestants came from more than 30 states, and the total number of essays submitted nearly doubled from 2020. The annual contest has two divisions – Junior and Senior – and each traditionally has three top winners: first, second and third place.

This year with the impact of the pandemic and the high number of essays submitted, the judges determined to award the top four entrants in the Senior division with a merit award; all four exhibited outstanding merit and warranted top placement.

The four Senior winners, in alphabetical order, are as follows:

Senior Division

Katie Krueger, OH

Joseph Palumbo OH,

Abigail Parker, MN

Annamarie Sieve, MN

The essays that came back covered a myriad of topics. Some cited their faith, or the experience of a family member who had an unplanned pregnancy, or a brother or sister who had a disability, to name just three. The passion and eloquence these young people expressed in their pro-life views was very encouraging.

By all accounts, the judges, who volunteer their time, felt that the overall quality of the essays was excellent this year. In many cases in the preliminary rounds judges came to a “tie” between contestants.

The 2022 Pro-Life Essay Contest will again address “Why are you pro-life?” The Senior Division is for grades 10 – 12 while the Junior Division is for student in grades 7 – 9.  Essays should be submitted between December 20, 2021 and January 21, 2022.  All essays for the 2022 contest must be postmarked by January 21, 2022.

The Pro-Life Essay Contest is part of a number of programs from the National Right to Life Committee that are molding and empowering the future leaders of the pro-life movement. Those include the NRL Academy, NRLC Internships, the NRLC Oratory Contest, the Video Contest, and a host of pro-life leadership camps that are held by state and local NRLC affiliates.

We want to thank all of the contestants and their respective teachers and schools for being a part of the 2021 National Right to Life Essay Contest!
