Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan Votes for Taxpayer Funding of Abortion on Demand

Congressman Tim Ryan (D), also a candidate for Senate from Ohio, once again betrayed his previously held pro-life beliefs on Thursday when he voted in favor of using taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. Ryan voted against including longstanding Hyde Amendment protections in the upcoming budget, which would compel taxpayers to fund abortions on demand, for any reason and at any time during pregnancy.

The Hyde Amendment, supported by members of both parties since 1976, is widely recognized as having a significant impact on the number of abortions in the United States saving an estimated 2.5 million American lives. National Right to Life believes that the Hyde Amendment has proven itself to be the greatest domestic abortion-reduction measure ever enacted by Congress. Additionally, a majority of Americans has consistently opposed taxpayer funding for abortion. A Marist Poll taken in January 2021 found that 58% of Americans oppose using taxpayer dollars to pay for abortion.

In 2015, Congressman Ryan penned an op-ed in the Akron Beacon Journal entitled “Why I changed my thinking on abortion,” announcing he had discarded his pro-life views. His newfound pro-abortion stance led him to vote against the commonsense pro-life proposals including ones to protect unborn babies capable of feeling pain and even to provide appropriate care to infants who survive failed abortions. Now, he has taken his pro-abortion views to the next level by voting to force all Americans to pay for abortion for any reason, at any time in pregnancy.

During the debate over including Hyde language in the appropriations bill, Tim Ryan gave a loud NO when it came to a vote. See video: (Ryan’s vote appears at the 4:15:20 mark)

Congressman Ryan unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020. His failed campaign ended after only qualifying for two debates and consistently polling below 1% in national polls. In 2020, pro-life President Trump carried Ryan’s home state of Ohio by 8 points over Joe Biden. Similarly, Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 8 points in 2016. Biden and Clinton’s support for taxpayer funding of abortion hurt them with voters.

Ohio voters should remember Tim Ryan’s vote for taxpayer funding of abortion on demand. Republicans need to net just one seat in the midterms to retake the U.S. Senate from the pro-abortion Democratic majority. Congressman Ryan’s pro-life views are long gone. No amount of “moderate” posturing Ryan may attempt in the campaign can change the fact that he would use your tax dollars to pay for abortion on demand.
