A greater appreciation of the “extraordinary gift” of human life

I vividly recall that when my mother discussed what it was like to give birth to her two daughters, she expressed overwhelming joy. Although she was a gifted wordsmith, it was a feeling she found difficult to put into words.

She acknowledged this, and said the best words she could come up with were that, seeing your child for the first time, it was like being handed a “tremendous gift.”

Fast forward some years later. I see my own daughter for the first time after undergoing 36 hours of labor. My mother’s words come back to me as I embrace my own tremendous gift.

As I was sitting in church recently, I was struck by a prayer petition that asked the Almighty for a greater appreciation of the “extraordinary gift” of human life. It is extraordinary. From birthdays to graduations to weddings, our lives are filled with extraordinary moments. Even the everyday miracles we take for granted—a lovely sunrise, a child’s smile, a view of a mountain range—are extraordinary.

This is what makes legal abortion so tragic. It robs an innocent, defenseless human being of the unmatched gift of life. It severs the sacred relationship between mother and child, robbing both of the joy which family brings.

There are no do-overs with abortion. Once it’s done, it cannot be erased. It carries with it a devastating permanence. While, thankfully, women can find healing and hope after abortion, the abortion itself comes with a debilitating cost.

Government is supposed to protect and defend the lives of its citizens. But the disastrous U.S. Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade gave government sanction to the taking of innocent preborn lives. This is an injustice that needs to be righted, and is just one more reason Roe v. Wade must be overturned.
