Georgia Senate passes bill requiring women undergoing a chemical abortion to have an in-person visit with a physician

By a vote of 31-22, the Georgia Senate Wednesday endorsed a bill requiring that a woman undergoing a chemical abortion be examined by a qualified physician in person. The Women’s Health & Safety Act would prevent distribution via telemedicine or mail—facilitating so-called “DIY” abortions. The bill now moves to the Georgia House.

State Sen. Bruce Thompson introduced the bill along with 31 co-sponsors. Last week he testified before the Senate Health and Human Service Committee. “These drugs were never intended to be provided without the direct involvement of a health-care worker,” said Sen. Thompson. ”These drugs were never intended to be delivered through the mail,” he added, according to reporter Dave Williams.
