Pennsylvania Senate Poised to Pass Amendment to Keep PA Constitution Abortion-Free

The top pro-life legislative priority in Pennsylvania is a Constitutional Amendment to ensure that state lawmakers decide abortion policy—not the courts.

In response to a decision by the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court banning taxpayer funding of abortion except in the rare cases of rape, incest, and the life of the mother should still stand, the abortion industry appealed to the state Supreme Court. If the state Supreme Court rules in favor of the abortion industry, state lawmakers would lose the ability to pass protective pro-life laws.

In a proactive move, the Pennsylvania Senate is poised to pass a Constitutional Amendment which calls for no right to taxpayer funding of abortion or so-called right to abortion under the PA Constitution. The Amendment must pass both the PA Senate and the PA House in two consecutive sessions before it can be placed on the statewide ballot for voters to decide.

The Amendment process does not require the signature of the Governor. Pro-abortion Democrat Governor Tom Wolf opposes any and all restrictions on abortion and abortion funding.

National public opinion polls consistently show that the vast majority of Americans do not want their hard-earned taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions.
