Having won the Miss America contest in 2018 and having just graduating from Harvard Law School, Cara Mund would seem to have a bright future ahead of her. On Saturday, she announced she would run for Congress as an Independent in North Dakota. This is a tough row to hoe —“Republicans hold every statewide office”–made nearly impossible for the self-avowed supporter of “abortion rights.”

Her announcement came “just weeks before early voting begins,” in according to James MacPherson of the Associated Press.

“Mund, who is running against the odds in deeply conservative North Dakota, told The Associated Press that the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn the constitutional right to abortion was ‘just a moment where I knew we need more women in office,’” MacPherson wrote.

Her platform was short on specifics and long on pro-abortion clichés.

“I don’t think the government should be in your bedroom. I don’t think the government should be in your doctor’s appointments. It’s your right to privacy, and as the first woman running for this position, I recognize the importance of that and the importance of having a woman’s voice heard,” Mund said in an interview with InForum, a Fargo area newspaper. “It’s an individual’s choice.”

Mund is acting as her own campaign manager. Her first task is to gather the 1,000 signatures she needs to get on the ballot.

The favorite to win is Rep. Kelly Armstrong, the Republican incumbent who won reelection in 2020 in a landslide. The Democrat is Mark Haugen of Bismarck.

“I already know it’s an uphill battle, and some people likely aren’t even going to vote for me because they think there’s no shot, but you don’t know until you try,” Mund told The Bismark Tribune. “I think the best part is I can take the best of both parties and find what’s best for North Dakotans.”

Try telling that to unborn babies.
