Picture this: a young woman, scared and alone, discovers she is unexpectedly pregnant. She turns to the Internet, searching for help. She quickly discovers a path to empowerment is just a few clicks away, thanks to the dedicated work of Real Alternatives, Inc.

The ground-breaking non-profit administers Pregnancy and Parenting Support Services programs in Pennsylvania and Indiana, and has provided the inspiration for similar programs around the country.

More than 433,000 women have been served by Real Alternatives since it began operations in 1996. Just think of that. Nearly a half-million women have received kind, compassionate assistance through the program, which quickly became a model for the rest of the nation.

Real Alternatives offers much more than free pregnancy tests. Its caring counselors provide comprehensive support to women facing challenging circumstances. They often serve as “mentor moms,” assisting women with various aspects of pregnancy and child care. From diapers to day care referrals, from baby formula to parenting classes, Real Alternative Centers offer women the non-judgmental help they need to bring their babies into the world.

The non-profit organization maintains the highest of standards among its service providers. It has earned the Seal of Excellence for its completion of the Standards of Excellence recertification program which is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations.

As Real Alternatives states on its website, “This recertification again identifies Real Alternatives as an ethical and accountable organization dedicated to the highest level of excellence within the non-profit sector.”

In a post-Roe world, Real Alternatives provides a valuable safety net for pregnant women and their families. With the help that the organization offers, women gain confidence and empowerment, ready to meet the challenges posed by parenting or an adoption plan.

As former Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey once said of the program, “Our business is to fight the poison of hopelessness with love.”
