SEA 1, Indiana’s new abortion law, the first to be passed after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, takes effect today. “The new law is expected to end over 95% of abortions in Indiana and will close all Indiana abortion clinics,” according to Indiana Right to Life. Upon signing the bill. Gov. Holcomb noted, “Following the overturning of Roe, I stated clearly that I would be willing to support legislation that made progress in protecting life. In my view, SEA 1 accomplishes this goal following its passage in both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly with a solid majority of support.”

Abortion rights supporters “have filed two lawsuits trying to block Indiana officials from enforcing the ban but no court rulings have been issued yet and all seven of the state’s abortion clinics will lose their licenses to perform the procedure under the new law,” NBC Chicago reported

Under provisions of SEA 1, abortions can be performed only in hospitals or outpatient centers owned by hospitals. This means that all abortion clinics will lose their licenses.

“The Indiana ban includes exceptions allowing abortions in cases of rape and incest before the 10th week of pregnancy and to protect the mother’s life and physical health,” NBC Chicago reported. “It also allows them if the fetus is diagnosed with a lethal anomaly.”

In a statement, Indiana Right to Life CEO Mike Fichter said

“Today marks a new opportunity for all of us in Indiana to come together to show true love and compassion for pregnant mothers and their unborn babies. It’s taken 50 years, and the loss of over 500,000 lives to abortion in Indiana alone, to finally arrive at this day. This historic moment is not about who wins and who loses, or about mere politics and court battles, but about a fresh new hope that a movement of the heart will unfold in Indiana that sets the pace for protecting life and providing the care and support pregnant mothers deserve.”
