Pro-life DeSantis and Pro-abortion Crisp tangle over abortion

CNN actually got the setting right for last night’s one hour debate between pro-life Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and pro-abortion Rep. Charlie Crist. “Down in the polls and nearly out of campaign money, Crist entered the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce, Florida, with almost nothing left to lose….”

That included attempting to batter DeSantis on abortion. “I want to make sure we keep a woman’s right to choose available to the women of the state of Florida,” said Crist. But with precision and passion, DeSantis contrasted his pro-life position with Crist’s:

“I’m proud of the 15 week [ban on abortion] that we did. I know Charlie Crist opposed that even though the baby is fully formed, has a heartbeat, can feel pain and can suck their thumb.”

DeSantis also said that Crist

“supports dismemberment abortions where they literally tear the baby limb from limb. And he supports taxpayer-funded abortion all the way up to the moment of birth, and that is wrong.”

When the question of what future legislation he might propose, DeSantis talked about a poor Jamaican woman who nearly went through with an abortion 40 years ago. DeSantis said the woman was urged to have an abortion and even went to her appointment, but she chose life for her unborn daughter instead.

I think about that because a few months ago I appointed her daughter to be the first Jamaican-American justice in the history of the Florida Supreme Court,” DeSantis said. “I just think we’re better when everybody counts. I understand not everyone is going to be born in perfect circumstances, but I would like to see everybody have a shot.”

According to the Miami Herald, “DeSantis accused Crist of only supporting abortion rights out of political expediency. He noted that when Crist was a Republican, he often considered himself on the other side of the abortion debate. Crist, a former GOP governor who left his party in 2010, once characterized himself as ‘pro-life.’

“The question is, is this an honest change of heart? Or is this a guy that’s going to shift with whatever when he needs to to try to keep his political career alive?” DeSantis said. “I think we all know the answer to that question.”
