More evidence “medication abortions” risk women’s health and even their lives

You would think—although unfortunately you’d be wrong—that with over half of the abortions now being chemically induced that pharmacists would be well versed in how this two-drug regimen work.

Especially with the Biden FDA now having updated labeling for mifepristone so that pharmacies (both online and brick and mortar) can now dispense the drug. Everybody knew that these new regulations were coming; they merely formalized a decision made in 2021 to permanently drop the in-person requirement for the distribution of the abortion pill.

But, alas, pharmacists are not necessary up to speed on the dangers of the mifepristone/misoprostol combination, according to Michael New.

New drew on a 2021 article in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association which reported on the results of an FDA-approved study into what would happen if pharmacists were to dispense chemical-abortion pills. Initially they were queried about what they knew about so-called “medication abortion” [their baseline], trained in how to dispense mifepristone, and then actually dispensed the drug. Roughly a year later the pharmacists took a follow-up survey.

The results of the baseline study indicate that most pharmacists were unfamiliar with the chemical-abortion regimen and the risks it entails. Considerably fewer than half knew about the dosage and administration of chemical-abortion drugs. Similarly, fewer than half knew about the FDA’s gestational-age limit for chemical abortions. Furthermore, many were unaware of common adverse effects related to chemical abortions, including vomiting, cramping, and bleeding.

The level of their knowledge did improve, “However, the follow-up survey still revealed some critical gaps in the pharmacists’ knowledge. For instance, only 53 percent of pharmacists knew of the risks of taking mifepristone. Only 42 percent were aware of the FDA’s gestational-age limit for chemical abortions. Similarly, only 30 percent were aware that fever and chills are common adverse effects of chemical abortions. Finally, barely more than half of the pharmacists (53 percent) were aware of minor-consent laws regarding abortion.”

These are by no means encouraging results. Worse yet, consider them in the context of mifepristone’s own serious risks, which advocates and government agencies continue to  blindly assert are “safe” and “effective.”

In fact, we know from the FDA that there have been at least 28 deaths associated with the use of mifepristone since the drug was approved in the U.S. in September of 2000, along with thousands of recorded complications.

A new study out of Canada makes clear that serious safety issues with these drugs are being ignored. “Complications and visits to emergency rooms are much higher than people have been led to believe,” wrote Dr. Randall K. O’Bannon, NRLC’s director of education & research. “These chemical abortions are consistently and measurably more dangerous than their surgical counterparts.”
