Florida Senate Passes the Six-Week Abortion Bill

by | Apr 4, 2023

Tallahassee FL – On Monday, SB 300, The Heartbeat Protection Act, sponsored by Senator Erin Grall (R Vero Beach) passed the full Senate 26 -13. Sadly, two Republicans voted with the Democrats. Those two are Senator Corey Simon of NW Florida and Alexis Calatayud (R Miami).

Senator Grall stated, “The Heartbeat Protection Act will make Florida a beacon of hope for those who understand that life is sacred and must be protected. This bill represents an unprecedented opportunity to protect innocent life, and to stand with the brave moms who choose life for their babies. This bill makes certain our laws reflect the strongest protections for innocent life.”

This bill “puts Florida more in line with the surrounding states like Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia,” stated Lynda Bell, Florida Right to Life President. She also said, “This will help Stop ‘abortion tourism’ whereby women and girls come into nearby Florida to obtain an abortion to avoid the laws of their states. This bill also provides much needed support for pregnant women. This is a great day”.

The bill disallows abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions. One important factor, is that all abortions including chemical abortion must be in person and performed or prescribed by a medical or an osteopathic physician.

Senator Passidomo (R Naples), the Senate president stated: “The Heartbeat Protection Act protects the most vulnerable, especially the unborn and strengthens state efforts to promote adoption and support families, with significant resources to benefit infants, young children and parents, which we hope will encourage more Floridians in difficult and unplanned situations to choose life for their babies.”

Florida Right to Life thanks both Senators and the bill sponsors for their leadership on this life saving legislation.
