NYC spends $500,000 on out-of-state ads to lure women to its abortion businesses

A new report from USA Today reveals that New York City is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising via billboards and online ads to attract abortion-minded women from out of state.

According to the outlet, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has placed a contract with Lamar billboards to place abortion-friendly messages in Georgia, Texas, and Florida — three states with a least some level of pro-life protections for preborn children. The department has also planned an ad campaign to run on both Google and Snapchat. Altogether, the total estimated cost of out-of-state advertising totals more than $500,000.

“In New York City, access to abortion care is legal, protected, and a critical component of public health,” a department spokesperson told USA Today. “We want anyone who might be in need of reproductive healthcare to know that we’re here to provide it.”

The billboards and several of the online ads say “Abortion. Safe + Legal for All in New York City” along with the number to the city’s abortion access hotline, which launched in November. That hotline contains specific travel information for women coming in from out of state.

According to USA Today, records show that the billboards have been set up in Augusta, Martinez, and Atlanta in Georgia, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Orlando in Florida, and Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio in Texas.

“This is the biggest waste of government resources since Andrew Cuomo’s trip to Savannah to lecture us on Covid,” Garrison Douglas, press secretary for Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, said in response to an inquiry about the program.

NYC isn’t the first abortion-friendly destination to run such an ad campaign. Last September, California Governor Gavin Newsom started a similar initiative when he placed billboards in states like Ohio, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas in an attempt to lure women to California so that they could legally kill their babies there. Some of those billboards were additionally controversial because they featured Bible verses insinuating that abortion is part of ‘loving one’s neighbor.’ According to Texas Right to Life, many of Newsom’s billboards in that state are remaining up for free until someone else purchases the space.
