Abortions in Iowa drop in months after Dobbs decision, pro-abortion Society of Family Planning reports

Some good news out of Iowa following a deadlocked Iowa Supreme Court whose inaction left in place Judge Michael Huppert injunction of Iowa’s 2018 Heartbeat law. That means abortion remains legal in Iowa up through the 20th week.

A report from the pro-abortion Society of Family Planning shows an average of 48 fewer abortions per month from April 2022 to December 2022 in Iowa, according to Linh Ta.

“At Planned Parenthood’s Iowa clinics, abortions have decreased by 13% since the decision, Sheena Dooley, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood North Central States, tells Axios.”

What explain the roughly 432 babies saved from abortion? “Though abortions remain legal in Iowa up to 20 weeks, a new 24-hour waiting period law that went into effect last July likely contributed to the decrease, Dooley says,” Ta reported. “The new law, which started a week after the Dobbs ruling, requires patients to get two appointments at a clinic with a 24-hour timestamp in between.”

“But it is notable that women are not traveling to Iowa from nearby states where abortions are banned,” reported Micaiah Bilger. “Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, other midwestern states like Kansas have reported an alarming uptick in out-of-state abortions because their states still allow unborn babies to be aborted.”
