Report laments that the overall number of brick-and-mortar independent clinics has decreased by 32 percent since 2012

Not every abortion clinic is a Planned Parenthood affiliate.  We tend to forget that. Many are Independents and many of them are affiliated with the Abortion Care Network.

Each year’s annual report is grimmer than the previous year. For example, I wrote last year that “Twice as many independent abortion clinics have closed so far in 2022 compared to the year before.”

This year’s report is titled “COMMUNITIES NEED CLINICS 2023: The Abortion Care Ecosystem Depends on Independent Clinics” The reliably pro-abortion Guardian leads with this alarmist summary:

Dozens of independently owned reproductive health clinics shuttered in 2023, the year after the US supreme court overturned Roe v Wade, according to a new report from the Abortion Care Network.

The group found that 23 independently owned clinics closed this year, on top of the 42 that shuttered in 2022, leaving over a dozen states, mainly in the American south and midwest, without a single brick-and-mortar clinic that provides abortion.

The year’s Abortion Care Network report includes a one-page distillation of their shaky status. It shows that

  • Independents [“indies”] provide 55% of the abortions performed. “Access to abortion care in the US depends on indie clinics staying open.”
  • “Abortion access throughout pregnancy depends on Indies: The majority of clinics providing abortion after the first trimester are independent.” Breaking this out reveals facts that few pro-lifers know of.  For instance

Indies constitute 61% of all U.S. clinics that perform abortions after the first trimester; 86% of all clinics that perform abortions at or after the 22nd week, and 100% of all clinics that do abortions after the 26th week.

In other words, Indies have cornered the market on later abortions. And

  • “14 states are without a single abortion-providing clinic: No state has been without at least one abortion clinic since ACN started tracking clinics in 2012.”

The bulk of the 28 page report is an extended lamentation mixed with admonitions that they should be supported because they truly are the ones on the firing line:

These clinics provide care when and where others do not–operating in the most hostile states and compassionately providing care as pregnancy progresses …

When Abortion Care Network started tracking clinic closures in 2012, we identified 510 brick-and-mortar independent abortion clinics in the U.S. As of October 2023, ACN identified 489 independent abortion clinics, just 346 of which are brick-and-mortar clinics. While there have been many online-only clinic openings since 2020 and a handful of brick-and-mortar clinic openings over the last decade, the overall number of brick-and-mortar independent clinics in the U.S. has decreased by 32 percent since 2012.

The independent abortion industry continues its downward spiral. It is great news especially with only 20 more days before Christmas.
