Wall Street Journal poll ‘very, very dark’ for Biden campaign former Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod says

Dec 13, 2023

By Dave Andrusko

This is one odd headline, especially given Jason Lange’s and James Oliphant’s deep bias in favor of pro-abortion President Joe Biden: “Biden’s challenge lies in reaching voters who have tuned out.”

(Actually a better explanation of what their story tell is this paragraph: “The 81-year-old Democrat’s prospects for re-election have been dragged down by voters’ worries about the state of the economy, concerns about Biden’s age and a general sense that the country is moving in the wrong direction.” But to return to the headline…)

“Rage and grievance are a key driver of Trump’s campaign,” they announce. “A lasting challenge for Biden will be to penetrate this cloud of anger by harnessing the relative popularity of his agenda.’

In other words more voters would be in Biden’s camp if they weren’t turned off from politics by Trump’s “Rage and grievance.” Not inflation, not high interest rates, not the soaring price of gasoline and food, not chaos on the streets of many major cities—all of which happened on Biden’s watch—it’s really Trump’s fault.

“Michael Ceraso, a Democratic strategist who worked for the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders, said the Biden campaign needs to hope that the mood of the electorate shifts to the point where more voters are open to his message,” Lange and Oliphant write.

“’There is no way you can reach people when they are frustrated. You have to wait for them to dial it down,’ Ceraso said. ‘Then you hope you can find the thing that moves the voter back into your column.’”

Ok.

Finally, the latest Gallup poll now shows 63% saying “they disapprove of Biden”, while

  • Just 35 percent in the latest results said they approve of the way Biden is helping the middle class.’”
  • Just a third of voters in the new poll said they approve of Biden’s handling of the economy, down three points from October, while 67 percent disapprove.”
  • “Roughly seven in 10 respondents said they would rate the country’s current economic conditions as poor — though that figure is down a few points from July. About four in 10 say they’re worried the cost of living ‘will climb so high that they will be unable to remain in their community.’

You may remember a story we wrote a few weeks back in which former President Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod  was characterized in a New York Times story as someone “who has repeatedly suggested that the president’s age will be a top concern for voters in 2024,” although he still stand by him. Biden’s endless stream of verbal gaffes “gave him an authenticity in the minds of voters that other veteran Washington politicians lacked.”

On a podcast he co-hosts, Axelrod said the Wall Street Journal poll showing President Biden’s approval rating hitting a new low is “very, very dark” for Biden’s reelection campaign.

No wonder Axelrod said

he was most alarmed by the numbers regarding voters’ perception of Biden’s and Trump’s policies when president. About 23 percent of voters said Biden’s policies have helped them, while 49 percent said the same of Trump’s policies. About 53 percent said Biden’s policies hurt them personally, and 37 percent said the same for Trump.

More tomorrow.
