Senate Democrats Announce Assisted Suicide Will Not Receive a Vote This Year.

by | Mar 4, 2024

“It’s not happening this year….It’s over for this year.” Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee Chair, Senator Will Smith.

In a press conference held by Senate Democrat Leadership today, Friday 3/1, Senate leadership shared that they are short on votes to pass Assisted Suicide in the Judicial Proceedings Committee. When pressed for why they were not holding a vote, Committee Chair Will Smith stated that one or two members were not prepared to support the bill as a result of communications from constituents.

As a recap, on 2/8, the Senate JPR committee heard compelling expert witness testimony prepared by MDRTL and coalition allies in opposition to SB443 Assisted Suicide. Special thanks to Senator Mike McKay (R) District 1 who, having prepared with as assist from MDRTL, vigorously questioned bill proponents. He adeptly highlighted the elevated risk the bill would pose to vulnerable patients in hospice care across the state. Proponents were forced to defend the many flaws of this deadly legislation which puts vulnerable communities including the elderly, disabled, veterans and poor at risk of suicide.

A virtual joint hearing of the House version HB403 was held by the House HGO and Judiciary committees Friday 2/16. HB403 has also not been voted out of committee.

An incredible 18,000 emails and 500+ phone calls were sent to committee members and legislative representatives through the Maryland Right to Life TAKE ACTION advocacy tool. We have heard from legislators who oppose the bill that they were impressed and encouraged by the volume of opposition coming from MDRTL membership.

Many thanks to every advocate who took the time to email and call when prompted by Action Alerts at the most crucial times of decision. YOUR VOICE MATTERED. We are grateful to MDRTL chapter leadership for their assist in marshalling advocacy and the tenacity of witnesses who sent in written testimony or endured long hearings to present oral testimony.

The critical work we do would not be possible without the generous support of our members! Thank you for your continued confidence in Maryland Right to Life. With half of the legislative session still to go, please help us finish strong by donating to MDRTL today.
