Why I am pro-life

Editor’s note. Last week NRL News Today posted the three winning essays in the Senior Division, grades 10-12, from the 2024 NRLC Essay contest. This week we are reposting the three Junior Divisions winners, which is grades 7-9, starting with the essay that was ranked first,

“It is a poverty to decide that a child must die, so that you may live as you wish.” St. Teresa of Calcutta.

I am prolife because everyone deserves a chance to live. Life is a gift from God, and we need to treat it wisely. When you end the life of a preborn child, you are eliminating a valuable soul from the world to be the person that God created them to be.

Abortion often happens when a woman is scared, alone and they feel this is their only choice. Mothers think that abortion is the easiest option and rarely consider adoption. Adoption is a better choice because the baby’s life is not only spared, but the mother is giving the child an opportunity to grow up in a family that wants him or her and who are excited to receive this new life. My four siblings and I are all adopted, and I am thankful that my birthmother chose life!

I volunteer at HELP Pregnancy Aid and I see firsthand the joy of each child, even though their parents are often in difficult circumstances. I have witnessed how much love these mothers have for their child and the happiness that their child bring them. It is beautiful to see fathers being a part of their life and being there to support the mothers. Where there’s a community like HELP surrounding them and meeting their basic needs, these parents have a greater belief in their ability to be successful.

Women are relieved and overjoyed to walk into a place where they can have their needs met. Families ask for diapers and formula, but often we find that they truly need a community, a network of help to support them through difficulties and to know that they are loved and not alone. Truly what they need is to know the love of God and that someone cares!

I am Guatemalan, and I feel especially drawn to helping Spanish speaking families realize that they are not alone and that they can choose life for their unborn child. I want to be a person who is not only pro-life in word but is also there to help every step of the way, so other children have a chance at life like I was given.

I am prolife because I believe what a woman carries in her womb is unique, beautiful, and wondrously created in the image and likeness of God. The world wants to tell woman a different message, that it is a woman’s right to abort and that abortion is health care. Mother Teresa said, “Please don’t kill the child. I want the child. Please give me the child. I am willing to accept any child who would be aborted, and to give that child to a married couple who will love the child and be loved by that child.” I am prolife to spread that message far and wide. Mother Teresa, pray for us!
