Education will open eyes to the truth about abortion

by | Jun 14, 2024

By Maria V. Gallagher, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

I had the privilege of appearing on a live radio talk show in Pennsylvania this week. The host, to his credit, wanted to ensure that he got both sides of the story with regard to Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision. The Court unanimously ruled that the challenger in the case, the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, did not have legal standing.  The result is that FDA changes in 2016 and 2021 making mifepristone much more broadly available stand.

After my segment concluded, the host and a caller talked some more about mifepristone, but confused it with another drug. I immediately emailed the host, informed him of the error, and he admitted on air that he might have misspoken. Ironically, his next guest, a pro-abortion advocate, confirmed that the two drugs were entirely different.

This experience demonstrates the importance of sharing vital, scientifically-based information with the news media. When we see or hear things regarding the pro-life issue that are not true, we need to step up and respectfully and winsomely set the record straight.

I firmly believe that, with education, eyes can be opened to the truth about abortion: the fact that it ends an irreplaceable, vulnerable human life. The fact that it leaves a mother to grieve the child she has lost. The fact that one in four women who take the abortion drug mifepristone will end up in a hospital emergency room.

People are busy and overwhelmed with the tasks of day-to-day living. The general public is not attuned to the nuances of the right to life issue. It is up to advocates for life to illuminate the truth, so that pregnant women and their preborn babies will be fully embraced and welcomed into the fold.

I recently heard that it is important to allow people to experience their conversions on the pro-life issue in private. We cannot expect an instant about-face. But, with grace and grit, we can work toward the day when America cherishes life at all ages and stages of development.
