Fetal models can penetrate the conscience like nothing else can

Jun 11, 2024

By Maria V. Gallagher, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

I recently heard a public official note how offended she was when someone attempted to offer her “a rubber baby” for her to hold.

Imagine being offended at the sight of a model of a preborn child—an innocent, unrepeatable baby whose life is threatened by the prospect of abortion.

Pro-abortion activists inside and outside of government may dismiss soft-touch fetal models, but I have seen first-hand the power that lies within them. Many times I have been present at a fair or festival when a child stepped up to a pro-life booth and eagerly cradled a fetal model in her hands.

Invariably, the little girl will cry out “Baby!”

It is astounding that a child of two or three can recognize something that fully-grown adults refuse to acknowledge—the humanity of the unborn child. It is self-evident, and it takes much propaganda to erase that vital fact from the mind.

As advocates for life, we must continue to educate—and that often means showing what an unborn baby really looks like. It is hard to justify abortion when you see the arms, legs, fingers, and toes of the preborn child.

Fetal models remain powerful educational tools. Sometimes they can penetrate the conscience like nothing else can. Let us continue to show, in a winsome way, the beauty of the preborn baby. She is a masterpiece who should be treasured at all phases and all stages of development.
