Each day in this country, champions for life sacrifice for the sake of others

As I gaze at the little American flag perched on a shelf above my office desk, I am reminded of the grand experiment that the United States represents.

Our founding fathers and mothers built a country based on the belief that people should be free—free to pursue their personal route to happiness and fulfillment.

Woven within the fabric of America is also a ribbon of responsibility for each citizen. We have a duty to support our country, with our voice and with our vote.

When I raise my head to look at the Stars and Stripes, I recall the men and women who valiantly gave their lives so that we could remain a free people. They sacrificed so that others might live.

Each day in this country, champions for life sacrifice for the sake of others. They provide material goods, a listening ear, and a loving heart to pregnant women facing challenging circumstances. They care for foster children and welcome adopted children into their homes. They tend to the frail elderly, providing hope at a time of great challenge.

We hear much these days about “reproductive freedom.” This carefully-crafted, focus group-tested phrase has been declared a winner at the ballot box.

But the term is a misnomer. Research indicates that as many as 60 percent of women are coerced into abortion by boyfriends, husbands, parents, or others in their lives. In other words, they are not making a free choice.

In many situations, women do not feel free to reproduce—held captive by a lack of money, childcare, housing, or emotional support. The abortion industry does not solve any of these problems—it only creates more. More heartache. More sadness. More grief.

The pro-life movement needs to take back the word “freedom.” Children should have the freedom to live…and women should have the freedom to give birth to their beloved babies. Indeed, the ultimate freedom is to be rid of the forces of violence and despair that drive women to the local abortion facility.

As we mark July 4, 2024, let us do all we can to deliver true freedom to pregnant women and their children, so that Independence can be celebrated for decades to come!
