I had just returned from church Saturday night when I began watching local news. A network special report interrupted the show. I saw former President Donald Trump raise his hand to his ear as shots rang out at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, just north of Pittsburgh.
As I saw the former Commander-in-Chief crouch down, I said a silent prayer. I then saw him, surrounded by Secret Service, escorted out of the rally, his fist pumping the air in a show of strength under fire.
I could not believe it. I had attended many campaign rallies before, both as a reporter and as a rank-and-file voter. I had never feared for my safety.
I was even more shocked that the assassination attempt had occurred in the Commonwealth I call home.
God protected the GOP standard-bearer. He is the Author of Life, the Creator Who abhors death and destruction.
I pray for my country, my Commonwealth, and the people of Butler, Pennsylvania. May we all draw comfort from God’s loving embrace.
