We must not allow appalling media bias to stop us from speaking up for pregnant women and their unborn children

Sep 5, 2024

By Maria V. Gallagher, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

A reporter from a local TV station contacted me this week, looking for pro-life voices to include in a report about the election.

I have to give the correspondent credit for aiming to present a balanced story—something that is missing from all too many news reports on the subject of the life issues.

When I was a reporter, industry standards required me to interview people on both sides of the abortion debate. I could not have gotten away with ignoring advocates for life.

But recently I read an article from a major city newspaper in Pennsylvania, quoting a Congresswoman proclaiming that those who identify as pro-life are fascists. The article proceeded to include quotes from pro-abortion extremists. No pro-lifers were included.

The appalling bias present in the article is why so many advocates for life distrust the mainstream media. Yet, we do a disservice to ourselves—and to pregnant women and their babies—if we fail to speak up.

We need to take every opportunity to proclaim the truth about abortion and the fact that it takes an innocent, unrepeatable human life.

We need to reveal the tremendous emotional pain it can cause women.

We need to be upfront about the physical damage that may be suffered as a result of abortion.

We must remember the names of the women who have died from abortion, such as Karnamaya Mongar, the woman who lost her life in abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s House of Horrors in West Philadelphia.

Television, radio, the Internet—these are all tools for getting the message out. So don’t give up! Keep talking, keep educating, keep advocating.

Truth will win out in the end.
