NRLC has written about the “Abortion Distortion” many, many times in the past. In brief it means that the usual legal rules are twisted all out of shape in order to favor abortion. Pro-abortion Democrats wield it as a hammer to bash pro-life Republicans, whether or not there is any substance to the Democrat’s charge.
Imagine my pleasant surprise when I read an editorial in the Wall Street Journal under the headline, “The Abortion Distortion Campaign”.
It is a damning indictment of pro-abortion Democrats who falsely, maliciously, and unscrupulously assign positions on abortion to pro-life Republicans that they don’t hold. For example, it doesn’t matter how often, or how clearly a pro-life Republican says he or she supports a life of the mother exception, the Party of Death will insist they don’t.
But the whoppers don’t stop there.
“A major offender is Tim Walz, who in the recent vice-presidential debate said that Republicans support ‘a registry of pregnancies,’” the editorial writes. “This followed Mr. Walz’s claim last month that “[Donald] Trump is trying to create this new government entity that will monitor all pregnancies to enforce their abortion bans.
“The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is running variations of this Handmaid’s Tale fiction, with ads accusing House Republican candidates of wanting to ‘allow state governments to track pregnant women to prosecute them if they get an abortion.’”
The tactic is employed reflexively by any Democrat who feels the walls closing in on him. “Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey is pulling the same dishonest trick, saying GOP challenger Dave McCormick wants to ban abortion, even in cases of rape or incest.’ That’s false,” the editorial asserts. “Mr. McCormick’s position is that ‘any abortion law should make exceptions for rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is in danger.’ Montana’s Democratic Sen. Jon Tester is giving the same ‘no exceptions’ treatment to Tim Sheehy, despite the Republican’s clear statements to the contrary.”
There are, unfortunately, other examples. If Democrats could experience shame, they would not tell boldface lies.
“Politics isn’t pickleball,” the editorial continues. “But Democrats aren’t even attempting to be honest about abortion this year. Perhaps they’re lying so extravagantly because abortion is a rare issue on which they have a clear political advantage.”
And the reason they have the advantage, I would add, is that they joyfully employ the “abortion distortion.”
The editorial concludes, “The next time you see an abortion ad from a Democrat, assume it’s not telling the truth.”
Amen.
